About

Bringing a new puppy into your home is an exciting time filled with joy and anticipation. It’s natural to have questions, and at Village Vets, we’re here to provide the support and guidance you need. From the earliest stages, our veterinary team will help you navigate essential steps in caring for your puppy, ensuring they receive the best possible start in life. Puppy Vaccinations: Protecting your puppy from serious diseases begins with proper vaccinations. Core vaccines guard against conditions like Parvovirus, Distemper, Leptospirosis, and Hepatitis (Adenovirus). Typically starting at 6–8 weeks of age, the initial course of shots is followed by boosters every 3–4 weeks, culminating in full protection.

Annual boosters will then keep your dog’s immunity strong throughout their life. Parasite Prevention: Puppies are especially susceptible to fleas, ticks, and worms. Regular, preventive treatments are key to maintaining their comfort and health. Worming should be done frequently in the early months, while monthly flea and tick control helps stave off infestations and the diseases these parasites can carry. Our vets will recommend the most effective and safe plan tailored to your puppy’s environment and lifestyle. Microchipping: In Ireland, all dogs must be microchipped by 12 weeks of age or before they’re sold or rehomed.

This quick procedure involves inserting a tiny chip under your puppy’s skin, providing a permanent link to your contact information. Microchipping greatly improves the chances of a joyful reunion if your puppy ever goes missing. Neutering: Neutering not only helps control the pet population but also offers significant health and behavioral benefits. Spaying females reduces the risk of uterine infections and mammary tumors, while neutering males prevents testicular cancer and can lessen unwanted behaviors like roaming and marking.

Our vets will advise you on the best timing for neutering your puppy, considering their breed, size, and overall health. From selecting the right preventive treatments to scheduling their first vet visit, we’ll ensure your puppy’s path to adulthood is smooth, safe, and filled with happy moments.
