More and more of our pets are becoming obese. It is estimated that between 40% of cats are well overweight whilst the percentage stands between 40%-45% for dogs. This article is going to discuss and illustrate the important aspects of the most common nutritional health condition in pets today.

Obesity is defined as an accumulation of excess body fat. An animal is usually classed as being obese if it weighs 20% or more over its ideal body weight. It is not natural and indeed it is exceedingly rare for a wild cat or dog to be overweight.

Some pets don't like wearing costumes. Forcing them to do so may cause undue stress. Don't put your pet in a costume except you are 100% sure they love it.

New law on microchipping

Did you know that as of the 31st of March 2016 it will be compulsory for all dogs in to be Microchipped?

As a dog owner there are a few things you need to know about the new legislation. 

1. Your dog MUST be microchipped and register on a government approved database such as fido.ie by 31st March 2016

Dougal Undergoes Surgery after Tennis Ball Dinner

Dougal began his misadventure when he came into us complaining of a sick tummy. Jenny the vet decided to take some X-rays as Dougal was just not feeling right after a few days.

After taking the X-rays we found out what Dougal's favourite toy was! He had a big tennis ball stuck in his tummy. This prompted the vet to rush Dougal into surgery to remove the precarious tennis ball.

Ted's Fight Against Parvovirus

Ted came into us last week as he was lethargic and having difficulty keeping his food down. Unfortunately Ted was diagnosed with Parvovirus. 

Canine Parvovirus infection is a highly contagious viral illness that affects dogs. The majority of cases are seen in puppies that are between 6weeks and 6months of age.

Try and "desensitise" your animal to loud noises by playing special "scary noises" CDs at low volumes and gradually increasing the volume over a number of weeks. This requires a lot of time but you will definitely reap the rewards of this long term.
